The teaching assignment includes both general undergraduate courses in computer science as well as specialized research-oriented master’s courses in artificial intelligence. She/he has proven pedagogical and didactic skills. The teaching assignment and precise list of subjects will be discussed with the candidate and will depend on his/her expertise and language skills.
The prospective candidate will be part of the VUB AI Lab that is involved in high quality research in Artificial Intelligence (AI) for more than 30 years. For more information about the lab and its research activities, cf. http://ai.vub.ac.be. The vacancy is open to all disciplines within AI. The successful candidate will complement and strengthen the research activities of the Lab, e.g. contribute new expertise that is relevant to ongoing research.
Core duties and responsibilities will include the supervision of master and doctoral students, and the management and active participation in the development of AI as a specialization.
The prospective candidate will also be expected to spearhead the launch of new research projects, both fundamental research as well as research in collaboration with industry, and to raise funds for the same.

The prospective candidate must hold a PhD in Computer Science or possess equivalent qualification in a Computer Science related field. She/he must have an excellent academic record with publications that demonstrate a solid expertise in Artificial Intelligence, must have at least least 3 years of postdoctoral experience, and must additionally be able to teach computer science at all university levels.
The prospective candidate has a broad and deep knowledge of both the techniques and the applications of AI. She/he has preferably experience in supervising doctoral and master's students. The ability to independently initiate new research projects and to acquire the necessary funds for this purpose, is an important selection criterion.
The prospective candidate preferably has teaching experience. An education professional education is compulsory organized by the university, unless the candidate can be exempted on the basis of previous qualifications or experience.
The prospective candidate should be able to teach in both English and Dutch (or be willing to learn Dutch on a short term basis).

Every first appointment is dependent upon the successful delivery of a teaching session.
Members of academic faculty with teaching duties are required to prove their command of the teaching language. E.g.: for teaching in English the candidate provides evidence of proficiency in English at C1 level by submitting a language certificate (or a waiver).
Recruitment in one of the academic ranks of Senior Academic Staff.
Recruitment in the rank of lecturer is a tenure track appointment which implies an initial appointment as lecturer for a period of 5 years with eligibility for tenure in the rank of senior lecturer by the end of this initial period.
Recruitment in other academic ranks is an initial appointment for 3 years with eligibility for tenure in the same rank by the end of this initial period.
