Function

A full-time faculty position is available at the Research Group of Organic Chemistry, Department of Bioengineering Sciences, Faculty of Sciences and Bioengineering Sciences, Vrije Universiteit Brussel. The successful applicant is expected to contribute to the strengthening of our high scientific and educational standards. Teaching is conducted in Dutch and English.

Research

The candidate should have a broad, interdisciplinary view on the area of synthetic bioorganic chemistry. He/she will become a leading member of the Research Group of Organic Chemistry, which is internationally recognized for its research in peptides and peptidomimetics chemistry (we.vub.ac.be/en/organic-chemistry). The infrastructure and facilities of this research group are available. The qualified applicant will develop an independent, challenging research program (complementary to the fields of peptides and peptidomimetics) by collaborating or interacting with scientists within or outside the research group, leading to peer reviewed extramural funding. He/she will target his/her research activities toward creative synthesis of complex molecules, in any area where chemistry and biology intersect, e.g. organocatalysis, biocatalysis, photochemistry/-catalysis, carbohydrates, lipids and conjugates, fine chemicals, …

Education

The successful applicant will teach basic, advanced, and specialized courses in organic chemistry at Bachelor and Master level in ‘Chemistry’ and ‘Bioengineering Sciences’. The interested applicant will also supervise Bachelor and Master dissertations in the area of bioorganic chemistry.

Profile

As a formal minimum requirement, applicants must a hold a PhD awarded on the basis of an original thesis.

Applicants must have a PhD degree in Sciences, (Bio-)Engineering Sciences, or a related field.

Applicants must show a track record of research activities at the highest academic level and within the research domain of the vacancy. A substantial, international, postdoctoral experience is recommended. The candidate is expected to show interest in valorization of research results in industry and society.

The candidate is to be committed to excellence in teaching at the Bachelor and Master levels. The Dutch language will be requested for teaching courses at Bachelor level after a transition period of three years. The candidate is expected to endorse the educational vision of the university (full text available on the university website).

Further, the interested candidate is expected to actively participate in management activities of the Department of Bioengineering Sciences.

    Recruitment in the rank of lecturer is a tenure track appointment which implies an initial appointment as lecturer for a period of 5 years with eligibility for tenure in the rank of senior lecturer by the end of this initial period.
    Recruitment in other academic ranks is an initial appointment for 3 years with eligibility for tenure in the same rank by the end of this initial period.
