The Vrije Universiteit Brussel is one of the five partners of the Flemish Supercomputer Center (VSC). VSC groups know-how in scientific and technical computing, including high performance computing (HPC), high throughput computing (HTC), cloud computing, data storage and data processing, and hosts infrastructure in four hubs, more precisely in the data centres of the University of Antwerp, the Vrije Universiteit Brussel, Ghent University and KU Leuven. VSC is governed and financed by FWO, the Research Foundation - Flanders.

At the Vrije Universiteit Brussel, the HPC services are offered to the academic community by the Shared ICT Service Centre (SISC: To extend the HPC team at SISC in the framework of the VSC’s activities at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel, we are looking for a technology expert in high performance computing.

Your responsibilities:

  • Together with your colleagues, you are responsible for the support of Tier-2 HPC infrastructure users, including installing, configuring, testing, and putting into production of software on that Tier-2 infrastructure, with a focus on code efficiency;
  • You support academic users during their preparation of project proposals to request computation time on the VSC Tier-1 supercomputer;
  • You contribute proactively to the realisation of the VSC’s operational objectives within the Vrije Universiteit Brussel and this in close contact with your colleagues involved in VSC at the other universities ;
  • You contribute proactively to the further development of the HPC infrastructure and HPC services, including authorisation and security systems and the monitoring of the proper functioning of these systems, and keep up to date on new evolutions in the field of HPC and scientific computing;
  • You report on the service levels realised.


You have a master’s degree (preferably in a scientific discipline) or equivalent through experience. In addition, you have experience with several of the following areas and you are willing to further specialise in those:

  • HPC system management;
  • Linux servers administration, preferably Red Hat/CentOS-based;
  • Automation (configuration management systems);
  • Virtualisation (OpenNebula);
  • Monitoring of systems, including job scheduling and infrastructure;
  • Object-oriented programming languages (Python, Perl, C++);
  • SMP en MPI;
  • Big Data;
  • Code compilation and optimalisation;
  • Scripting using Bash and Python

You have the following competencies in line with those of the HPC team:

  • You are eager to learn and inform yourself on new developments within the discipline;
  • You like to share knowledge and express yourself fluently in English. Knowledge of Dutch is a plus, knowledge of French is an additional asset;
  • Customer-friendliness is a core value to you;
  • You work in a structured way and pay attention to detail;
  • You demonstrate efficiency in the autonomous development of a project but can also work in a team;
  • You strive for continuous improvement, both within your own way of working but also within your work environment, and you also encourage others to do so. You do this on the basis of structural initiatives.
